Nick was born in London, 1953, now lives and works in Bristol.
He is a painter, improvising musician, and published poet and has been a practicing artist for twenty years. He is an experienced tutor and lecturer in both art and art history, working in Higher and Further Education, as well as running studio based painting and drawing workshops along with courses in galleries, museums, and community venues.

He has previously worked as a performer in street theatre, circus and fringe theatre; as a stonemason and architectural carver; a sculptor, registered art therapist and art tutor. Nick is represented by Anthony Hepworth Fine Art.

His work as a musician and painter are both rooted in spontaneity and improvisation, embracing chance and taking risks; this relates to the embodying of vitality and freedom, and the idea of authenticity – and as Asger Jorn put it, “to escape the tyranny of reason.” The combination of chance and deliberation are what John Cage talked about as ‘considered improvisation’.
For Nick painting is a way of being, a search for meaning – each painting is a journey to a place unknown, based on feeling and resonance with something deep – a subterranean seam, a rich vein that lives in the dark – it can be recognised poetically, with the heart, not the intellect.
