Exhibition: ‘Objects of Desire’ 7th September-31st October 2012
Roberts practice reflects on an interest in the mediation of cultural fictions through the painted and drawn image. The work often materializes from collecting imagery from the internet which is then dislocated and reformulated through painting and drawing.
He works quickly and details are replaced with modulations in the surface, textures, thin glazed layers and tentative daubs. In this transcription there is a flux between the intentional and causal and the images’ figurative origin is held in suspension. The painting creates a anarchic space for itself, disregarding the need to establish certain ends. An overarching interest lies in the tension of interpretation and the mediation of information which demands a constant balancing of revealing and obscuring, economy and precision both for himself and the interpreter.
