10 weeks, 10 Artists – Week 1. Robert Lang
Looking at Robert Lang’s painting’s makes me think of Walter Sickert or maybe Walter Sickert makes me think of Robert Lang. A painting by Sickert called ‘The Rose Shoe’ was apparently inspired by the activities of Jack the Ripper.
‘Reference imagery is usually hoarded from the internet reinforcing a sense of remote observation and the tension of personal involvement.’
Sickert drew on the news coverage of the Ripper murders and in ‘The Rose Shoe’ more than a century ago creates an engagement with the viewer very similar to the atmospheric ambiguity of Robert’s small enigmatic apparently gentle paintings.
